Bipolar Disorder, formerly known as manic depression, is a condition that can be treated if recognized. It is a very serious psychiatric condition that can be dangerous to the wellbeing of the person, their lifestyle and physical health. Would you recognize any symptom of bipolar disorder if you saw it? Remember it is called bipolar because it is distinguished by the two behaviors that are polar opposites of one another.

The most recognizable symptom of bipolar disorder is the extreme mood swings. A person suffering from this condition will go through periods of lows where they are deeply sad, feel no self worth, feel hopeless about everything; this is the depression side. During this phase the person can have changes in sleep patterns, become dependent on illicit drugs or alcohol and experience suicidal feelings.

Then there is the mania side in which they feel creative, happy, hyper, and confident that the world is theirs. The manic feeling can also bring out an increased sex drive, aggressive behavior, an inability to concentrate and sometimes hallucinations.

One very worrisome symptom of bipolar disorder is that often the sufferer enjoys the manic feeling and does not want to use any prescribed treatments to affect a change. They feel alive and well, their lives look up and they think they can cope with anything. Convincing them to take medications that will even out their mood is far from easy.

Another worrisome symptom of bipolar disorder is that an episode can come up at any time. Sometimes there are triggers that can cause an episode. For example if there is a major life change that occurs like a marriage break-up, birth of a child, getting fired or hired at a new job. Excessive stress can certainly bring on an episode, but so can the use of medications. Interestingly changes in the seasons are also a trigger with the manic side being more likely to surface in the summer and the depressive side the other seasons.
